JRL rallies against 'plight' of inmates, police detains Malik, others | KNO

Srinagar, February 06 (KNO) : Police on Wednesday detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik on Wednesday while leading a protest rally from Abi Guzar in Srinagar for release of political prisoners of the state. The rally was organised by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising of Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik over the deteriorating conditions and imprisonment of people on the basis of political affiliation in valley. The protest was also organised to raise the issue of those detainees who have completed their term of detention but have not been released. According to KNO correspondent, Malik before being arrested told reporters that the political prisoners are lodged in various jails even after completing their sentences and cited Muhammad Qasim Fakhtoo who has completed 26 years in jail, Shabir Shah, Naeem Khan, Aasiya Andrabi, Fahmeeda Sofi and Naheeda Nasreen, Masarat Alam as example. "United nation human rights commission and other human rights organisations to focus their attention on to the issue and ask for the release of all political prisoners," he said before being bundled in the police gypsy. According to KNO correspondent protesters assembled outside JKLF's office at Abi guzar Lal Chowk and marched towards city center amid anti India and pro freedom sloganeering. JKLF spokesman said that the rally was intercepted by police near Press enclave. "Police had blocked the roads going towards Lal chowk by police vehicles and other barricades but protesters resisted police hegemony and highhandedness bravely. Protest rally continued despite heavy rain and snow and police using its might arrested Yasin Sahib and others,” he said. Police swung into action and detained several activists including Yasin Malik. They have been lodged in Kothibagh police station. (KNO)
